What is an escape room?
In case you’re new to the escape room concept, here’s how Wikipedia defines it: “An escape room, also known as an escape game, puzzle room, exit game, or riddle room, is a game in which a team of players discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms to achieve a specific goal in a limited amount of time. The goal is often to escape from the site of the game.”

In this post, I’ve put together a mix of traditional escape room-style experiences and immersive puzzle adventures. Whether you’re unlocking treasures, solving mysteries, each theme is packed with creative challenges to engage and entertain you and your group of friends, family, or even for fun events at home!
Harry Potter: The Mysterious Professor
Let’s be real—who doesn’t love J.K. Rowling’s magical world? At some point in our lives, we all wanted to receive that letter from Hogwarts, informing us that we’re wizards and inviting us to the best school ever—The School of Magic! And of course, we all had to face the disappointment that the letter never came. But what if we could create our own magical plot in Harry Potter’s world? I’m sure it would be incredibly creative, so here’s my idea.
In this escape room, participants are students at Hogwarts who have snuck into the office of a mysterious new professor—unaware that he is none other than Harry Potter himself. Once inside, they find themselves locked in, and the only way out is to uncover the professor’s secret identity and discover the spell that opens the door.
Throughout the experience, players will encounter hidden objects and magical artifacts from Harry’s past, such as the Golden Snitch, Tom Riddle’s notebook, and the Half-Blood Prince’s book. These items offer clues to understanding who the professor really is and how to escape.
Puzzles could include solving riddles using Harry Potter lore—like using the Sorting Hat to reveal house-specific codes or matching details from newspapers about ‘The Boy Who Lived’ to piece together Harry’s history. The central puzzle revolves around a book of new spells invented by the professor, where players must eliminate incorrect spells to find the one that opens the door. They may also find pieces of the final spell hidden in different parts of the room, which must be assembled correctly. The decor will evoke the feeling of Hogwarts, with house banners, magical bookshelves, and dark wood furniture, creating an atmosphere straight out of the wizarding world.
Fashion Treasure: Legacy of a Designer
I’ll be honest—I’m not “a fashion person.” Fashion can be time-consuming and expensive, especially when I’m busy with university classes. But movies like The Devil Wears Prada and Cruella totally captivated me. I couldn’t help but think of how to incorporate this into an escape room!
This escape room takes participants into the studio of a legendary fashion designer who has passed away, leaving behind a cryptic message for her granddaughter. The message invites the granddaughter and her friends to visit her workshop to find a hidden treasure: a dress that the designer considered her life’s masterpiece. To open the wardrobe containing this iconic piece, participants must follow clues and solve intricate puzzles related to the designer’s life.
Puzzle ideas include a large board tracing the evolution of fashion, with clues hidden among the names of famous designers. Another puzzle could involve piecing together torn fashion sketches to reveal a common element—like a handbag, which contains the next clue. There could also be a love letter between the designer and her lost love, with hidden messages in the writing. A final puzzle might involve creating a DIY compass to guide them to a hidden painting, behind which the key to the wardrobe is concealed. The room would be decorated with fashion sketches, mannequins, and rolls of fabric, making participants feel as if they’re in a real designer’s workshop.
5 Unique Escape Room Themes Inspired by Movies and Novels:
After the Crash: Mystery of the Survivor
Last year, I read the thriller novel After the Crash by Michel Bussi, and OMG—I just can’t recommend it enough. So, I came up with the idea of transforming its plot into an escape room. But beware, there are spoilers ahead! If you’re thinking of reading the novel, I suggest you skip the next two paragraphs and check out the review I wrote about it here. Then, come back to explore this game idea and share my obsession with this incredible story!
In this gripping escape room, participants must solve an 18-year-old mystery. After a plane crash, only one baby girl survived, but there were two baby girls on board: Emily, from a poor family, and Liz Rose, from a wealthy one. Both families fought over the baby, and a detective was hired to uncover the truth. Years later, just when the detective had the answer, he was found dead in his office. Now, participants must enter the detective’s office and uncover the truth about the girl’s identity before time runs out.
To make things more interesting, players must figure out the two possible identities on their own. Puzzles include matching family trees of both girls to uncover clues, reviewing DNA test results, and linking items found in the detective’s office to the girls’ family histories. The detective’s diary contains hidden hints about his final conclusions. The climactic puzzle is a journal entry from the day after the crash, which reveals a front-page article about the crash and a second page about an 18-year-old girl who went missing—looking exactly like our mystery girl because she was the real mother’s daughter! The room decor will resemble a vintage detective’s office, with old files, maps, and evidence boards adding to the mystery.
Disney Princess Rescue
Okay, I know that in today’s modern world, “princesses don’t need saving; they can defend themselves.” But hey, it’s still fun to play along with a classic plot! Let’s save the princesses!
In this magical escape room, a villainous Disney character has kidnapped all the beloved Disney princesses, and it’s up to the participants to save them. Players must navigate through puzzles and clues to figure out where the princesses are being held and find the key to free them.
Puzzle ideas could include using Cinderella’s blue high heel to unlock a code based on foot size, gathering clues from the petals of Beauty and the Beast’s enchanted rose, or finding hidden messages in a small mirror, reminiscent of Snow White. Participants might also search for hidden items in seashells (for The Little Mermaid) and analyze a villain board to figure out which one is responsible. The room decor will transport players to a fairy-tale world, complete with castle-like walls, mirrors, and Disney-themed props.
Greek Mythology: Poseidon’s Lost Trident
I went through a phase where I was obsessed with mythology—especially Greek mythology. So I thought, why not create an escape room around Poseidon?
In this escape room, participants are archaeologists who have discovered an ancient temple hidden beneath the ocean. The temple is said to hold the long-lost Trident of Poseidon, and players must solve ancient riddles and puzzles to find the trident before the temple collapses.
Puzzles could involve deciphering ancient Greek symbols, using a constellation map to align stars and unlock a treasure chest, and finding hidden objects related to water gods, such as seashells and pearls. Another puzzle might require creating a makeshift water compass, guiding players toward a hidden part of the temple where the trident is concealed. The decor would feature Greek columns, ocean waves, and ancient artifacts to create an immersive underwater adventure.
And yes! Finally, you’ve made it to the end of this post! I really hope you enjoyed reading and found the ideas useful. If you did, it would be great if you shared this post with your friends and pinned it so you can return to it whenever you need inspiration for an escape room theme.
